The Religious Significance of Hajj and its Benefits in Daily Life

One of the most important foundations of Islam is the sayings and instructions of the Prophet Muhammad Mustafa (PBUH). In Islam, guidance is sought first from the Qur’an and then from the Sunnah of the Prophet or Hadith, and the importance of Hajj is made clear by both.
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar that Hazrat Akram said: Islam is based on 5 things. To bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, prayer (Salat), pay Zakat and perform Hajj to the House of Allah and fast in Ramadan.

The religious significance of Hajj

Most importantly, Hajj was included in the fundamental tenets of Islam, which is proven by the hadith. Every year, Muslims perform various duties for the Hajj from the 8th to the 12th of Zul-Hijjah.

This group of acts of worship as a whole is called Hajj and all acts of worship are called rituals of Hajj. According to Islam, Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime for every capable adult Muslim who can afford it.

In the Holy Qur’an, verse 97 of Surah Aal-e-Imran states that Pilgrimage to the House (Kaaba) is due to Allâh from everyone of mankind who is (physically, financially, and in many other ways) able and has the means to make the journey thereto. And whosoever disobeys (let him remember that) Allâh is Independent of the worlds.

Jihad for women

According to a hadith narrated by Ibn Majah, Hazrat Ayesha (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him): We know that jihad is the best, should we not do jihad?

Answering the question, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: No. The best jihad (for women) is the Hajj. According to Ibn Majah and Umm Al-Mumineen, Hazrat Ayesha Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: Is Jihad obligatory on women too? He said: A jihad is obligatory on them in which there is no bloodshed and that is the blessed Hajj.

Condemnation on not performing Hajj despite being able to

Some people do not perform Hajj despite their ability, physical ability, and money, which is strictly condemned in Islam. It has been said in the hadith that a person who has the necessary equipment for Hajj and has a ride that can take him to the House of Allah, if he still does not perform Hajj, then there is no blame on him if he dies as a Jew or as a Christian.

From a hadeeth, it is clear that the person who doesn’t do Hajj is a disobedient servant of God, whose transformation into Islam or believing in God doesn’t change him, while Islam’s name is to follow God’s will. Allah Almighty decides whether a person is an unbeliever or a faithful person along with Heaven or Hell.

Method of performing Hajj in 2023

Every year a large number of Muslims around the world come to Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj. After entering ihram from the prescribed meeqat of Hajj, the pilgrims visit the Kaaba of Allah, where Tawaf and Qadoom are performed.

During Tawaf, the pilgrims raise their voices saying Talbiyah and kiss the Black Stone ( Hajar Aswad ) if possible, which is aimed at following the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

After Tawaf and Qadoom, the pilgrims leave for Mina where the day of Al-Tarwiyah is spent. Then a 1-day break is observed in Arafat. This day is called the Day of Arafa, the Day of Sa’i, and the Eid of Sacrifice.

On the same day, Muslims either shorten their hair or completely shave their heads. Then the pilgrims throw stones at the devil (Satan), which is followed by the Tawaf at Makkah.

After the Tawaf of Afaza, the pilgrims go to Mina where they spend the days of Tashreeq, after which they return to Mecca. After the farewell circumambulation, the rites of Hajj are completed.

The situation of Hajj this year

The Health Ministry of Kingdom Saudi Arabia reports that only those who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 may visit Saudi Arabia and perform the Hajj this year, Saudi newspaper Okaz reported.

“The COVID-19 vaccine is mandatory for those willing to come to the Hajj and will be one of the prime conditions (for receiving a permit to come),” Monday’s report said, citing a circular signed by the health minister.

The Benefits of Hajj in daily life

Muslims use the word religion for Islam, the way of life, in which Hajj is a manifestation of the unity of the Islamic world. When a person from every Muslim country in the world raises the voices of Labaik Allahumma Labbaik and Allahu Akbar, the world of humanity appears prostrate before God. It feels like it is adoration of love.

The title of romantic worship was given to Hajj because every action of a pilgrim is a manifestation of madness. At the same time, a person participates in Hajj through all three aspects, spiritual, physical, and financial, which is not possible in any other form of worship.

According to Musnad Ahmad, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Hurry to perform Hajj because no one knows what excuse will be given to him. Abu Dawud says that a person who intends to perform Hajj should hurry.

According to Sunan-e-Saeed, one of the most important companions of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, Hazrat Omar Farooq (RA) wanted to impose Jizyah on Muslims who did not perform Hajj because he did not consider such people to be Muslims.

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Whoever performs Hajj only for the pleasure of Allah and utters no word of evil, nor commits any evil deed, shall return from it as free from sins as the day on which his mother gave birth to him.
