Which Holy Places Are Visited During Hajj?
Hajj is the fifth fundamental pillar of Islam and every able-bodied Muslim is required to perform Hajj once in a lifetime and every year millions of Muslims from all over the World reach Mecca, the holiest city of Muslims, to perform this spiritual Worship.
What is Hajj?
Hajj is the name of a group of acts of worship performed in Makkah from 8 Dhu al-Hijjah to 12 Dhu al-Hijjah, which include entering ihram, circumambulating the Kaaba, striving, stoning the devil, listening to the sermon in Mina, the night vigil of Arafat, and attendance to Roza e Rasool (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
Obligation of Hajj
Allah says in the Holy Qur’an ” There are clear signs in it, one of which is the place where Abraham (peace be upon him) stood. Whoever enters this (blessed) house has found peace. Pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to God by people who can undertake it, and whoever does not obey this command, then God does not need the people of the world. (Al-Imran)
Regarding the rites of Hajj, Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar says that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that Islam is based on five things. (i) Evidence that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (ii) Praying (Salat) (iii) Paying Zakat (v) Fasting in Ramadan and (v) Performing Hajj.
The acts of worship performed during Hajj are called the rites of Hajj which must be performed and if somehow not performed then Dam (Kafaarah) becomes obligatory.
Mina is a city of tents where pilgrims arrive on the eighth of Dhu al-Hijjah and will stay here following the Sunnah of the last Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and commemorate the Prophet’s time.
On the ninth of Dhu al-Hijjah, pilgrims reach Arafat, where the sermon is delivered in the Nimrah Mosque and the pilgrims listen to the sermon in the field of Arafat, after which the pilgrims perform the Zuhr and Asr prayers jointly and spend the whole day in remembrance and worship of Allah.
This is an obligatory part of Hajj, without which Hajj is not complete.
In Muzdalifah, the pilgrims perform the Maghrib and Isha prayers together and stay up all night, and spend the night sleeping on the ground beneath the open sky. In the morning, pilgrims gather pebbles, which they will use in the stoning ritual later in the day. After shaving their heads on the tenth of Dhu’l-Hijjah, the pilgrims.
At this place, three devils are stoned. This is also an essential part of Hajj, without which Hajj is not possible. Pilgrims follow the Sunnah of Hazrat Ibrahim (as) and throw stones at the devils.
When Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) was going to slaughter his beloved son Hazrat Ismail (PBUH) by the command of Allah, Satan tried to seduce him in three different disguises so that he would not sacrifice his son.
But every time Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) had chased away the devil by throwing pebbles, later in the places where the devil tried to seduce Mr. Ibrahim, a pillar-like object has been made which the pilgrims throw pebbles at.
